by Sylvia for everyone

By popular demand there will be another get together for those of us who met in Crete May this year at the Greek-o-File 10th anniversary do, plus any who would have liked to be there but could not make it. The venue will be Skala Polichnitos (near our new part time Greek home), S. Lesvos. The core dates will be 6th-8th June 2010, so you can book travel & accommodation separately for a week or more, or book a package to another part of the island and come over for a few nights (3-4 preferable min.). You can start planning your holiday now, although there is still plenty of time to book.

Skala Polichitou is an atmospheric working fishing village with a couple of tavernas alongside the harbour plus 2 more tavernas open all year and therefore also early June.  This is a 'mostly Greeks' resort, so the few other places open only for the tourist high season, some just July & August, some at weekends early season.

This makes it just perfect for any lover of the real Greece.

It is 5 km by road (a bit less walking on old tracks) from Polichnitos, a small traditional town, which boasts the hottest natural spa - water is cooled in the communal ladies only & men only baths.  Nifida (beach & a few tavernas) or Skamnioudi (small harbour & 2 tavernas) are about 5kms either side of Sk. P on the gulf of Kalloni coast, whilst Vatera with its long beach, open to the Aegean on the south Lesvos coast is another 8kms from Polichnitos.  It's ideal walking country for nature lovers.  Kalloni is 35-40 minutes away by car or taxi.

The main events planned are:

Sunday evening 6th June - Taverna Meal at Maistrali, Sk.P. hopefully with live Greek music.

Monday afternoon 7th June - meet at Polichnitos Spa (walk 6km, hire car or taxi) test the waters and walk down to Sk.P.

Tuesday early evening - party at Sylvia & Terry's house in Polichnitos (pay deposit for food & bring own drinks)

If staying in Skala Polichnitou or surrounding area, we suggest an early evening meeting place for other evenings. This worked very well in Kalyves offering instant camaraderie with like-minded Grecophiles. The beachside My Way is happy to serve drinks only (€2 for beer this year) and is also one of the 4 all year tavernas, run by a Belgian couple and serving traditional Greek food plus a few Belgian twists.

I hope many of you will decide to stay in Skala Polichnitou for a week (Thursday & Saturday flights from Gatwick & Manchester to Mytilene, 1 hour away). We have sourced studios/rooms with more beds than we're likely to need, but many are not interested in short stays, or are 1 week minimum. (I'll list these with contact details on the events pages so I can add to them, as I'm awaiting confirmation of some details.)

Look forward to meeting up again next year - for a bit longer this time. Let us know if you are looking to share accommodation as there may be others in a similar situation. I'll get the rooms contacts on the events section soon. Thursday flights will be cheapest, so I guess the Thursday to Thursday will be the main week. We won't have official entertainment dancers as it's not that kind of place, so could be looking for subscribers who know a bit more than us to lead the dancing! Any offers?

Hi Sylvia, I got back from England on Tuesday so I've had some catching up to do and this evening checked out here. House looks good, event sounds good, when the puddle jumpers have published next summers timetables etc I have to get organised. Good Luck to you and Terry, Gra.

Hi folks
This is sounding really good but I'm not sure that it will work for Colin and I. However we may well end up on a package to Petra a little later in the month. The autumn will be the earliest we are likely to be firming up plans. If we don't make it to Big Meet 2 maybe we can still come and visit you Sylvia & Terry; and Kath, if the start of our holiday should overlap the end of yours perhaps we could have a "mini-meet"?

We're always pleased to meet up with Greek-o-Filers whilst in Lesvos (or anywhere else really). We are likely to be in Polichniotos most of May & June next year. We couldn't go for the following weekend (which was considered) because one of the main places we're suggesting to stay - Erica & Lefteris' in Sk. Polichnitou - has a German group booked from Wed 10th June for 1 & 2 weeks, althougfh they won't necessarily take all their rooms. Are you coming ourt alonbe or with friends. Could be a good place to get your booking in now Kath as they offer a cheaper single room rate too. You are the first with flights booked that I know of, so I'll put you down as 'confirmed' for next year. I've not seen the rooms (only their village house), but they are by the Sk.P beachfront, have communal area, terrace & library below & kitchen anyone can use. I believe the table & chairs on the beach Sk.P pic I posted is theirs. Erica & Lefteris have the small farm opposite our back roof terrace & they're involved with Friends of Green Lesvos, soap making & some German Natural History and walking holidays, I think.

Hi Sylvia,
The plan was that in September I was going to visit Sk Polichnitos with SKL2 (& hopefully pay you and Terry a visit at the same time!!) and we would sort out the accommodation and pay deposits at the same time. Do you think I need to book it before then or should I risk another 8 weeks? I know you did say that they didn't tend to get booked up much in advance.
Do you know yet what date you will be flying out yet or is that still to be decided?

Hi Kath,
I should think it'll be fine to leave until September when you can have a look and see where you like. Erica & Lefteris are mostly there only in the mornings - they seem to have very busy lives with their farm animals to see to morning and evening.
We are trying to book to arrive Monday evening 14th September - but no reply back from our Olympic Airlines contact yet. (Not unusual!) The date may vary if we can get a cheaper deal or better flight times a different day. Must chase again today. I'll let you know when confirmed & look forward to meeting up again. Are M&K coming next June too?

Hi Sylvia
It certainly looks that way I'm pleased to say!!. They are hoping to sort their early holiday to include the "Meet" and it was they who emailed me to suggest we go together in September to look at rooms in Skala P. It will be easier to do it that way I think, because we can pay the deposits at the same time without having to deal with bank transfers etc from the UK!!

Hi Sylvia
Lovely to hear of arrangements for another get together for next year. Please count me in, I shall have to see if I can get sorted with flight and accommodation. Any recommendations if the Erica & Lefteris are booked up?
Jill.

Hi Jill
Just got back from a FAB fortnight on Lesvos......met up with Sylvia and Terry in Skala Polichnitos while we were there. We had lunch at the taverna that is going to be the venue for the Sunday night shindig and the food was delicious!! Booked a room overlooking the harbour for 4 nights and then plan to head back to Skala Kalloni for the rest of the fortnight. There is plenty of availability for booking rooms still and the rooms with Erica and Lefteris are 5 minutes gentle stroll from the harbour. She gave us coffee and fried zuchini flowers (a local Lesviot delicacy!!..and very delicious!!) which I have tried several times before!
Looking forward to meeting you next June!

Hi Jill,
Glad you are 'on board' for next June. Skala Polichnitos does not get booked up early - especially for June - so should not be difficult to find something nearer the time. So far accommodation wise (that I know of) Kath has booked a 'harbour view' studio at 'To Petrini Avli' 5-8th June - 1 other at front available, plus 2 at back (offered 25 euro single, 30 if double occupancy on 4 nights). We also looked at Erica & Lefteris' rooms and I believe none booked yet - they have about 12 dble rooms. They are very friendly and offer shared cooking facilities and, it seems, never ending pots of coffee or tea in the area at the front downstairs. Lefteris said he may be taking on some more rooms to look after next year, but don't know where, plus there is Muses & the other one we sourced a telephone number for as quoted (Asteria?). There are others, but unable to make contat o dte.
Latest flight options direct or via Athens are on another blog which Kath & myself have been updating. If you are looking to stay partly here (Polichnitos) & partly somewhere else then let me (or Kath) know if we can help with accom.
Looking forward to seeing you again next summer.

Hi Sylvia, Could you let me know if the rooms mentioned as double do in fact have twin beds in some as that is what my friend and I would require please? Looking forward to it already.
Am off to Crete again on Thursday - this time to Elounda for 2 weeks. Should set me up nicely for the winter, although it hasn't been too bad a summer here in Portsmouth.
Hope your work on the house is nearing completion.

Hi Jill (and anyone else who wants to know),
I know Nikos front rooms are both twin bedded and one back at least is a double bed as that is where we stayed in December for a week before we had water & electrics sorted at our new house. The one we saw at Erica's was twin & I suspect all hers are.
Our roof terrace has been rather more work than anticipated, but coming along well. Wall built around & undercoat painted plus three quarters tiled. Back to the grindstone any minute now to get more tiles down!
Enjoy Crete again.
Sylvia
